The default assumption in 5e is that even lowly healing potions aren't easily available for purchase. But if you're looking for a good way to spend your downtime, it's a valid option, if your DM's making the same calls as I am. RAW, there's no reason to craft your own potions of healing when you can just buy them for half the cost of creating it.ĥe is much more magic-poor than previous versions, so you may not get as much out of having the ability to brew potions as you would otherwise expect. I'd still probably make it so that only spellcasters with access to healing spells could create healing potions, though. And I'd do the same for any other consumable item, quarter the item creation cost and time - uncommon potions would be 125gp and five days, rare potions would be 1,250gp and 50 days, etc. So if I'm making the DM call, I'd reduce it to 25gp and one day of work. Now, to me, that's stupid, because you can just buy one for 50gp.

So reading it RAW, a basic potion of healing can only be crafted by a spellcaster, takes four days to craft and costs 100gp, plus proficiency in the herbalism kit. The character must also be a spellcaster with spell slots and must be able to cast any spells that the item can produce. On top of that, from the DMG again, since the potion of healing is listed as a magic item: proficiency with this kit is required to create antitoxin and potions of healing. Common items are listed with a creation cost of 100gp, minimum level 3rd, 1 day of work per 25gp of value, and whatever other proficiencies the DM requires:įor example, a character might need alchemist's supplies to brew a particular potion.
